Department of transport infrastructure (O21)

The issues of transport infrastructure are linked to more than fifty-year tradition of research in the field of roads and airfields. Currently it is addressing the tasks focused on rationalization of the design, construction, maintenance and repairs of roads, railway structures and bridges. It also prepares background materials for the technical policy, diagnostics and evaluation of operational and technical conditions. It also addresses legislation, standardization of technical regulations in the field of transport infrastructure.

Laboratories are part of the Department of transport infrastructure and environment accredited to carry out set of tests for concrete and mortars in fresh and hardened state, geotechnical tests, soil and base layers of roads, and the measurement of selected variables, parameters roadways.

The research area is focused on addressing selected issues of transport infrastructure:

Measuring and evaluating the skid resistance of road surfaces

Good skid resistance of the road surface is essential to ensure safe driving and reduce the risk of accidents. It is therefore essential to monitor this variable not only before the road is put into service and at the end of the warranty period, but also throughout its life.

Measuring equipment

We use an updated 2019 version of the TRT vehicle for measurement. The basic component is a foldable measuring wheel tow that can be hidden in the vehicle when not measuring. An electromagnetic retarder is used to break the measuring wheel to the required slip ratio. The pressure of the measuring wheel on the ground is controlled by a pneumatic system. An ASTM reference measurement tyre without tread is used and the road surface in front of the measurement tyre is wetted by a water dosing device.

Advantages of the TRT vehicle measurement

The on-road measurement does not require any traffic restrictions and can be carried out in traffic. The length of the measurement section can be any distance from 20m. Measurements can also be carried out on airport runways.

The normal measurement speed is 60 km/h. On motorways and expressways with a speed limit of more than 110 km/h, a speed of 80 km/h shall be measured. When measuring on a new surface and for assessment at the end of the warranty period, in addition to the continuous measurement, measurements are taken at three to four different speeds.
