Department of transport and emission modeling (O27)

Department 27 - illustration photo

The department of emissions focuses on establishing emission factors for different vehicle categories, including of non-limited pollutants, preparation of dispersion studies with the SW Symos and Aeolius, inventory of transport emissions at the national and regional level, including the development forecasts and assessing the feasibility of compliance with emission limits. The assessment includes not only an assessment of trends, but also proposal of measures that lead to reduction of emissions (e.g. charging the entrance to certain parts of a town, development of public transportation, design of Park and Ride and Bike and Ride systems, introduction of public multimodal logistic chains, etc.) in frame of regional programmes to reduce emissions and air pollution. Specific model solutions are also developed, such as calculation of emission flows from cold starts, calculation of emissions in dependency on speed and capacity of traffic flow, etc.

Transport models have an essential role in verifying the conceptual development options for a given area and in the selection of an optimal alternative for a planned structure, intention or concept. Emphasis is placed especially on the multimodal nature of models, which enables to assess the impacts of planned measures not only to car traffic, but also to other transport modes (public, bicycle transport). Territorial scope of models includes the entire Czech Republic, as well as particular regions or larger towns. For the modeling, we use the top Canadian software EMME/2, which allows compatibility with GIS data.

Projects:

  • Methodology for Determining the Emission Flow from Road Transport to Monitor, Evaluate and Control Air Quality
  • Support to CDV’s Involvement in the International Organization IENE

Services:

  • calculations of emission flows from traffic,
  • inventories and forecasts of emissions, depending on transport development scenarios, including the compliance with the national and regional emission ceilings,
  • creating programmes to reduce emissions and air pollution from traffic,
  • creation of multimodal transport models and development of new algorithms (SW EMME/2),
  • assessing (modeling) the effectiveness of measures proposed to improve the environment,
  • analysis of time accessibility by public and car transport,
  • preparation of dispersion studies (SW Symos, Aeolius),
  • preparation of expert opinions as starting materials for decision-making processes.
